At 8:45 Sunday morning, Northwest Chapter President Phil Peters met with the drivers on the Mt. St. Helens tour and provided detailed instructions to drive from the conference hotel to Highway SR 504 to Mt. St. Helens without using I-5. We left the hotel shortly after 9 PM with six Studebakers and five brand Xs. Amazingly, the caravan of cars kept together through all of the signals and stop signs to SR 504. The drive to Johnston's Ridge was beautiful with the overhead clouds remaining high, so that views into the valley were clear. We moved along at a brisk rate and again, the caravan of vehicles remained together as we pulled into the parking lot. After the initial group of cars parked, Bob Williams and his wife Carolyn pulled in, and about a half hour later Chuck Tubens showed up, bringing the total Studebaker count to eight and the people count to 26. We spent around an hour and a half viewing the wonderful exhibits, videos and films of the volcano eruption and the rehabilitation over the last 35 years of the once barren landscape. Those of us that hiked the trails a bit found the views of the valley and the lower flanks of the mountain to be quite good. We gathered again in the parking lot just past noon for Phil's final remarks regarding the breakup of the tour, and that those who wanted to, could stop for lunch at Hoffstadt Bluff Visitors' Center on the way back. I stopped off to visit a friend at Silver Lake.
